Utah Educational Savings Plan awards scholarship accounts to bookmark contest winners

Make Your Mark winners 2016

Eight Utah students received $1,000 Utah Educational Savings Plan (UESP) college savings scholarship accounts for their winning entries in the 2016 “Make Your Mark” Bookmark Contest sponsored by UESP and StepUp to Higher Education social awareness campaign.

The winners received their $1,000 UESP scholarship accounts during a luncheon ceremony held at the Zions Bank headquarters building in Salt Lake City on November 7.

A panel of judges that included Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and First Lady Jeanette Herbert selected two winners from each of four grade categories in the contest.

The winners are:

  • Sophia Carr-Adams Elementary, Logan School District, K-3rd grade
  • Walker Heiner-North Davis Preparatory Academy, Logan School District, K-3rd grade
  • Kennedy Lopez-Freedom Elementary, Alpine School District, 4th-6th grade
  • Eliana Zinger-Wasatch Elementary, Salt Lake City School District, 4th-6th grade
  • Danju Zoe Liu-Midvale Middle, Canyons School District, 7th-8th grade
  • Elizabeth Martin-Midvale Middle, Canyons School District, 7th-8th grade
  • Aliyah Hagen, Herriman High, Jordan School District, 9th-12th grade
  • Mia Hilton, Sky View High, Cache School District, 9th-12th grade

The judges were:

  • Governor Gary Herbert and First Lady Jeanette Herbert
  • Tami Pyfer, Education Advisor to Gov. Herbert
  • Dr. Charles Lepper, VP Student Affairs, Salt Lake Community College
  • Donna Jones Morris, State Librarian
  • Julie Olson, Author/Illustrator

The winning students can use their UESP college savings scholarship accounts to pay for qualified higher education expenses at any college, university, or technical school in the United States or abroad that participates in federal financial aid programs.

In addition to receiving college scholarship accounts, the winners also may see their professionally reproduced bookmark designs handed out at UESP events around Utah.
